The Iconic Mitchell Brothers Film Catalog Acquired by Mélusine

The iconic Mitchell Brothers film catalog has been acquired by Mélusine. This purchase includes the legendary "Behind the Green Door" and a host of other groundbreaking films the brother producer/filmmakers/free speech advocates created during their prolific run.

The XXX History of Jim & Artie Mitchell

Over a twenty-year span, beginning in the final year of the 1960s, brothers Jim and Artie Mitchell produced and directed more than 200 short and feature films, often collaborating with various talented individuals from their Cinema 7 film collective.

Their landmark 1972 XXX production "Behind the Green Door," 1975's "Sodom & Gomorrah," and 1976's "The Autobiography of a Flea" are just a few of their seminal porn releases. Working from their home base at the now-iconic San Francisco location of their O'Farrell Theatre at 895 O'Farrell Street, the brothers launched and maintained their empire.

They produced their famous films, operated a movie theater chain, worked to bring theatrical pornographic films into the growing home video market, and created live shows at their theater. In 1986, the brothers even confronted the AIDS crisis by promoting safe sex practices and produced the very first safe sex hardcore film,

"Behind the Green Door, The Sequel." Acquisition Specifics

The purchase of the Mitchell Brothers catalog was facilitated by Ashley West, proprietor of the website and podcast The Rialto Report. Many of the Mitchell films that will now be available to the public have not been seen since their original release. Mélusine will oversee the curating and reissuing of the collection, effectively revealing the untold history of the early adult film industry. Building on this, Distribpix and Vinegar Syndrome will reintroduce the Mitchell Brothers catalog on home video starting in November 2025, beginning with the 4K UHD and Blu-ray debut; a deluxe 3-disc edition of the seminal "Behind the Green Door."
