Trans Adult Star Kasey Kei Talks About Her Unique Start In Porn

Kasey Kei is one of adult entertainment’s most acclaimed and dynamic trans performers. Below is our conversation with Kasey on her experience stepping into the porn industry, and her life since.

How does a former makeup artist who worked retail cosmetics at Macy’s and Nordstrom, come to adult entertainment, especially after what had to be one of the biggest events in your life, your transition at age 22?

Haha the secrets out I’ve always wanted to be a pornstar! Since I was young, I have had an intense fascination with porn. I idolized the work but being so young I was riddled with self esteem issues and felt doing porn was not a viable future for me. Around the same time, I fell in love with makeup while exploring my gender expression. That and the typical doubt of the future led me to pursue a career in makeup. After a few years of working in cosmetic retail I hit what felt like was my rock bottom and decided to take the plunge and transition. It had been on my mind for years, but fear and self-doubt held me back. Feeling I had nothing, what did I have to lose?

And then with transitioning you then began to shoot scenes?

Yes, transitioning, the best decision I’ve made in my life. Fear of social rejection had me look back on the career I once romanticized and I decided, fuck it, let’s do it. I began filming self made content uploaded to Pornhub and shot my first studio scene with Grooby. I never looked back.

I know you were enjoying your sexuality across Fetlife and Reddit before working in adult. What do you think you learned from those platforms that influenced you in your future adult work?

Perhaps the biggest asset I gained through those years of early exhibitionism was confidence. Thank goodness my perversion was stronger than my physical insecurity and uploading to sites like Fetlife and Reddit helped me realize I was desirable. And I think especially being in the thick of adult work now, that confidence is so important. It’s so easy to spiral self-analyzing; believing you’re not good enough. Porn is a physical medium, and I think it’s natural to be critical of yourself, but you can’t get lost in it. Self-esteem and security is pivotal to success in this career.

How did you manage to helm your breakthrough movie, “Kasey Kei: Muses?” Was it just a matter of biding your time until all the ‘planets aligned’ or did you just say to AdultTime that you felt it was time to do the project?
I guess you could say the planets aligned. At the time, Bree Mills had helmed a series for Adulttime titled Muses. Her intention was to create a series of scenes that highlighted and celebrated major trans performers of the time. I was one of the many privileged to be asked to star in a scene.

Does gaming and your love of anime dovetail into your adult work world? Or do you keep the two separate pursuits in your life?
My personal life and work life is actually pretty separated. When I’m at the card shop for a local tournament I don’t divulge my career. Though I’m sure there are some silent fans amongst the people in the store! But that’s how I lead my life. I’m not just my career, I’m also a unique individual with their own hobbies and I don’t feel the need for my career to bleed into every aspect of my life. One way though that my hobbies and life as a pornstar has intersected was by me meeting my best friend Khloe Kay. We met on set, and we had an immediate connection through our mutual love of anime. Without anime I don’t think Khloe and I would’ve bonded the way we have.

You have won so many awards, do you have any that are your particular favorites?
Winning AVN’s “Best Trans One-on-One Scene” in 2024 is definitely my highlight of accolades thus far. Firstly, it was for my Muses’ scene, a scene I had full creative control over. Two, this award was my first AVN win. Winning an AVN was when I finally felt like I had made it as a pornstar.

What does the layperson most get wrong about trans experience?
That not all trans people live under the construct of ultra femininity. Gender expression is on a spectrum and it is no different for trans individuals. Not all of us are dysphoric over our genitalia. We express ourselves in many ways, some which could even be read as a masculine expression. An example with me is that I unapologetically stand when I pee! I couldn't give a fuck of gendered expectations, standing will be always easier than sitting. I say, just be considerate and wipe the rim and put the seat down.

Do you have any hard no’s in your adult scenes?
Oooh, that’s actually a tough one because I am so easy going in bed. Really, only extreme fetish play is out of bounds for me. Like, we can get kinky but some people want to get kiiiiinnnnnkkkyyy and that’s a bit too much if you know what I mean.

Tell us a little about the work you do with Pineapple Support.
So Pineapple Support is a non-profit that aims to help sex workers get connected to mental health services. My job as ambassador is to represent them, whether that be through social media posts or representing them at conventions. The big thing for me is being able to have conversations about mental health with the men and women I’m in direct contact with and guide them to try therapy if they’re interested. Therapy changed my life so I’m really proud to be a Pineapple Support ambassador.

What’s coming up for you in the near future, across all of your interests and pursuits?
On my hobbies end I’m working towards competing in the regional format of the One Piece TCG. Anybody reading please cross your fingers so I can make top 64 of competing players!
